Every Christmas season, The Salvation Army of Rowan County brings hope and joy to families through the Angel Tree Program—and none of it would be possible without volunteers like you.
Volunteers are at the heart of Angel Tree. They help us ensure that every child receives gifts that are collected, sorted, and matched with care. Whether you have a few hours or several days to give, your time makes a real difference in someone’s Christmas.
Our volunteers serve in a variety of roles throughout the Angel Tree process, including:
Client Assistance: Helping families apply for the program by recording their information and entering it into our computer system with care and compassion.
Sorting Gifts: As donated gifts arrive, volunteers help organize them by child and family number so everything is ready for distribution day.
Bagging & Boxing: Many gifts fit into large plastic bags, but some—like bicycles or oversized items—are placed in our “Box Section.” Volunteers help label and organize these items so nothing gets misplaced.
Distribution Day Support: On pick-up day, volunteers help bring gifts—both bags and larger boxed items—out to families’ vehicles. It’s a busy day, but also one of the most joyful!
Volunteering with Angel Tree is more than just organizing gifts—it’s about bringing hope, dignity, and joy to families in need. Along the way, you’ll:
Meet amazing people in our community.
Work together as part of a supportive team.
Experience the joy of seeing families receive the gifts donated for their children.
Walk away knowing you’ve made Christmas brighter for hundreds of kids in Rowan County.
Many volunteers tell us that serving with Angel Tree is one of the most meaningful parts of their holiday season. You don’t need special skills—just a willing heart and a few hours to give. Every role, big or small, adds up to a Christmas morning full of smiles.

“I thought I was just sorting toys, but then I saw a little girl’s bike set aside in the Box Section with her name on it. I realized this wasn’t just a bike—it was Christmas morning for a child in Rowan County. That moment made me want to come back every year.” – Sarah, 2nd-year Angel Tree Volunteer
“I signed up to help with data entry, and at first it felt like simple paperwork. But then I met the families, listened to their stories, and realized how important it was to get every detail right. I left knowing I had helped more than I could see.” – James, New Volunteer
“On distribution day, I got to carry gifts out to the cars. The joy and relief on parents’ faces was incredible. It was like I got to deliver Christmas in person. I’ll never forget that feeling.” – Maria, 5-Year Angel Tree Volunteer
“What I love most is the teamwork. Everyone has a role—sorting, bagging, boxing, running gifts to cars—and together it just works. You leave tired but so fulfilled.” – David, Angel Tree Volunteer
“I was nervous about volunteering because I didn’t know what to expect. But after my first day helping sort and bag gifts, I realized it’s one of the most joyful, organized, and welcoming teams I’ve ever been a part of.” – Emily, First-Time Angel Tree Volunteer
“Some of the gifts are too big for bags—like bikes or dollhouses—and I helped move those to the Box Section. It may sound simple, but when you picture a child waking up to that gift, it becomes the most meaningful job in the world.” – Anthony, Angel Tree Volunteer
“I loved meeting families during the intake process. Sitting with them, entering their information, and hearing their stories reminded me why the Angel Tree program matters so much. It’s personal, and it’s powerful.” – Linda, Angel Tree Volunteer
“My favorite moment was seeing all the toys lined up, ready to go home with families. It looked like Santa’s workshop right here in Rowan County. Being part of that was pure joy.” – Chris, Angel Tree Volunteer
“At the end of the day, you don’t just volunteer—you become part of a community that cares. You’re surrounded by people who want to make a difference, and that feeling stays with you long after Christmas is over.” – Karen, Long-Time Angel Tree Volunteer
